For two years, Russian leader Vladimir Putin has been prosecuted by the International Criminal Court in Hague. In retaliation, Russia chases its judges. One of them is Professor Piotr Hofmański, former president of the International Criminal Court, who in “One on One” on TVN24 spoke, among others, about a possible sentence for the Russian leader.
The guest of “one on one” on TVN24 was Professor Piotr Hofmański, former president of the International Criminal Court in The Hague, who is prosecuted by the Russians in retaliation for the fact that the Tribunal decided to pursue Vladimir Putin two years ago.
“You should hope that justice will be done”
– This action of the Russian authorities is obviously related to the fact of my function. However, the allegations that are made to my person do not know exactly what, remain current – he said.
He admitted that when traveling, you still have to be careful to avoid countries that could spend it Russia. – All my travels and movement take place under the control of the Court's services, whose chancellor is also obliged to take care of the safety of former officers.
He was asked if he believed that Putin would ever stand in front of the tribunal. – When the Tribunal for former Yugoslavia issued arrest orders in relation to Mladic, Karadzic, and Miloszewic at that time, most observers knocked on the head and said “you will never get them”. Everyone finally sat on the bench. It should also be hoped that justice will be fulfilled, which of course requires a number of different conditions – answered Professor Hofmański.
What threatens Putin?
He also commented on Putin's return to a diplomatic game and his conversations with the president USA Donald Trump.
– It is so that international law is for the weak. Those who have a great, strong political position, including military, do not need this international law. It is not an important weapon for them. They have different weapons they use in inter -state relations. Hence, it is much more difficult to implement the ideas of justice at the international level in relation to those who have great political strength – he said.
Vladimir Putin is prosecuted by the Court for crimes against children – for kidnapping children, for forced deportations, for depriving children of identity. According to Professor Hofmański Ukraine They can become the subject of proceedings.
When asked about what sentence Putin could receive, he replied that we can only talk about it “in the theoretical plane.” – The sentence depends on many individual factors related to the circumstances of committing a crime or circumstances related to the accused person. Theoretically, however, the Roman statute, which is the basis of the tribunal's actions and which defines the crimes and penalties provided for these crimes, as the most severe punishment provides for life imprisonment – said TVN24 guest.
