One midwife, six home births under scrutiny by prosecutors. Nurses' court decision
Six home births involving one midwife are being investigated by the prosecutor's office, analyzed by the provincial consultant in the field of nursing, and checked by the Chamber of Nurses and Midwives, first in GdaĆsk, then in Szczecin. Beata K. allegedly endangered the lives and health of those giving birth and their children. The District Court of Nurses and Midwives in GdaĆsk made a decision today on the consequences for the midwife. What awaits her? And can future parents feel safe?
- Lilianna's child was put into a drug-induced coma, doctors transfused blood. This is how the home birth with the participation of midwife Beata K. Other families also told tvn24.pl about irregularities. The midwife was supposed to supervise the course of the birth over the phone, telling the women to breathe loudly into the receiver. She was not supposed to reach some of them at all, the women gave birth alone at home.
- The GdaĆsk prosecutor's office is investigating six cases of endangering the lives and health of women giving birth and their children. Experts need a year to analyze medical records.
- The professional self-government dealt with the matter. There were two inspections, the matter was first examined by the Chamber of Nurses and Midwives in GdaĆsk, then in Szczecin. They do not want to disclose the conclusions of both inspections because, among other reasons, “there is no legal basis for disclosing this information to journalists”.
- In June, a hospital in Bydgoszcz saved the child of another family. The home birth was led by Beata K.
- On Tuesday, August 27, the District Court of Nurses and Midwives in GdaĆsk decided on the consequences for Beata K. Jakich. Can she still attend home births and run a childbirth school?
The case of midwife Beata K., who delivers home births, was first described in December 2022. Five families told tvn24.pl about the course of deliveries with her assistance. The list of negligence was long, and mothers accused the midwife of endangering the health and lives of newborns.
