Pope Francis died of stroke, irreversible cardiological collapse and coma – said the Vatican in the evening.

The death act wrote that Pope Francis (Jorge Mario Bergoglio), born in Buenos Aires in Argentina on December 17, 1936, residing in Vaticandied at 7.35 on April 21, 2025 in his apartment at the House of Saint Marta.

The direct causes of his death were: stroke, coma and irreversible cardiological collapse – we read in the official medical announcement issued by the director of the Vatican health service Professor Andrea Arcangeli.

In addition – as it was written – the Pope suffered from earlier acute respiratory failure due to mutual multimicrobiotic pneumonia, bronchitis, hypertension and type II diabetes.

The Italian daily “Corriere della Sera” gave information about death because of the stroke in the early afternoon, citing unconfirmed reports circulating in the Vatican.

The Holy See announced the official cause of death over 12 hours after his death.

Pope Francis is dead

Pope Francis died on Monday at 7.35, during recovery after severe pneumonia. He was 88 years old. On Easter Sunday he greeted the faithful in the Vatican during the blessing of Urbi et orbi.

On Monday at 20 o'clock the official rite of finding the death of Pope Francis and assembling his body in the casket began in the Vatican.
