The Oświęcim police have arrested a suspect in connection with setting three cars on fire. The man aroused the suspicion of firefighters after they realized that he had been watching their work day after day. He also boasted that he had not only reported the fire but had also prevented it from spreading.
The incident occurred on the night from Thursday to Friday. In the town of Poręba Wielka in the Małopolska province, a fire consumed two cars: an Opel and a Peugeot.
– While firefighters were extinguishing the fire nearby, they noticed a man watching. They came closer and recognized him as the witness who had notified the services about the Audi fire in Oświęcim the day before – said Senior Sergeant Małgorzata Jurecka, press officer of the District Police Commander in Oświęcim.
The man boasted at the time that he not only called the firefighters to a car fire, but also limited the damage by breaking the window of a car standing next to the burning vehicle and pushing it to a safe place.
– The police, suspecting that the man may be involved in the arson, detained him. The observation of the uniformed officers was confirmed by Oświęcim detectives. Based on the evidence collected, the 32-year-old was charged with three counts of damaging property – said Staff Sergeant Jurecka, adding that the court decided to arrest him for three months.
The man faces up to five years in prison for destroying property.
