New York is home to the most billionaires in the world – as many as 144. About 30 percent of the richest people on Earth live in just 15 cities.
According to the latest “Billionaire Census 2024” report prepared by Altrata, the number of people with a fortune worth at least USD 50 billion increased by 4% compared to last year. There are already 3,323 of them. Billionaires increased their wealth by a total of 9% during this period. According to Business Insider, the size of these fortunes is currently $12.1 trillion.
Of all cities, New York has seen the largest increase in billionaire residents. There are currently 144 billionaires living in the Big Apple. There are nine more than last year.
Hong Kong came second with 107 billionairesalthough it has lost five in 2023. San Francisco (87) and London (78) gained three new billionaires each. Moscow rounds out the top fivewhich has only added one new billionaire and currently has 77 of them.
Fewer billionaires in China
“Most of the top cities (inhabited by) billionaires have seen an increase in the number of the richest residents, with the largest observed in New York and Los Angeles. (…) The problems of the Chinese economy have contributed to the decline in the number of billionaires in all three largest centers of wealth (in PRC): Beijing, Shenzhen and Hangzhou, as well as in Hong Kong,” noted Robb Report magazine.
He added that thanks to this, Los Angeles overtook Beijing and moved up to sixth place. The city in the western part USA gained five new billionaires and currently has 62 of them. The capital China lost two members of the elite club and dropped to seventh place. Currently, 60 billionaires live there.
They recorded the highest percentage of new billionaires (15.9%). India. 304 of the world's richest people now live there, 40 of them in Mumbai (formerly Bombay).
