In 2023, the number of accidents was flattened. Now we have growth again. There is not a big increase, but the reversal of the trend is significant – said TVN24.pl journalist Bartosz Żurawicz, who told the details of the police summary of last year. It shows that compared to 2023, the number of accidents on roads, fatalities and wounded increased.

TVN24.pl editors were the first to reach a police report covering the most common causes, places and circumstances of accidents in 2024. It shows that this year was statistically less safe than 2023.

Bartosz Żurawicz spoke about the details of the summary related to safety on Polish roads on Polish roads. He reported that most often accidents in Poland occur in the middle of the day, “on a straight section of the two -way road in very good weather conditions”.

Żurawicz noted that in the aforementioned weather conditions “over 70 percent of events” occur. “Bravura, lack of concentration, is the main aspect that counts,” he said.

He also drew attention to another aspect. – Some time ago I prepared a text in cooperation with the Main Road Transport Inspectorate and it turns out that on sectional speed measurements – where drivers know that they will not avoid a mandate, if they ride bravado – (…) we observe a radical increase in safety – he explained. He added that “until 2026, Gitd plans to increase the number of places where the section speed measurement will function.”

Mortality in accidents. “The worst in Europe”

Żurawicz noted that “the last decade was almost a revolution when it comes to safety on Polish roads.” – In 2015 there were about 40,000 accidents in Poland. In 2022, there were twice less, about 20,000. This chart of the number of dangerous events on the roads in Poland resembled a ski hill, it was all down – he said.

As he reminded, “even the European Union noticed it, indicating that Poland has undertaken an effective fight in this decade when it comes to road safety.” – In 2023 there was a flattening (…), now we have growth again. This is not a big growth, but in fact turning from this trend is significant because we must remember that it is not at all that we have reached this safe place, that we just have to come to terms, that accidents occur – he assessed.

Żurawicz pointed out that “9 people die out of 100 accidents in Poland, and for example in many other countries (European – ed.) This number is almost twice lower.” “We're just the worst in Europe in this respect,” he said.

More accidents involving motorcyclists

Żurawicz referred to the issue of accidents involving motorcyclists. – Between 2023 and 2024, one hundred thousand motorcycles came in Poland, so this pool of drivers who move actually significantly increases. This is a percentage of about 10 percent, quite large. Only that this does not quite explain the number of accidents, because it increased much more – he said.

– I think this is such an additional aspect, that is, motorcyclists who often move in such a way that drivers lead to such events – he assessed.

According to police data in 2024, motorcyclists participated in 2,447 road accidentsin which 216 drivers and 13 passengers were killed. 2 109 motorcyclists and 191 motorcycle passengers were injured. This is a clear increase compared to 2023 – there were more accidents by 500 (an increase of 25.7 percent), there were more 33 (height 16.8 percent), and – wounded at 471 (25.7 percent).

The TVN24.pl journalist also drew attention to the positive part of the police report. “Less drivers in 2024 caused an accident, being intoxicated,” he said.

According to a police report in 2024, almost every tenth accident (exactly 9 percent) was attended by a person in a state of intoxication.
