Roads covered with ice. More than half of Poland is covered by IMWM warnings

IMWM issued first degree alerts. Forecasters warn against freezing precipitation, which may cause black ice. Icing is also expected in parts of the country. Find out where to watch out.

Forecasters from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management issued first-degree meteorological warnings on a three-level, increasing scale.

First degree IMWM warnings – freezing precipitation

Yellow alerts apply in the following voivodeships:

  • Lower Silesiain the following counties: Kłodzko, Ząbkowice, Strzelin, Dzierżoniów, Świdnica, Wałbrzych, WałbrzychKamienna Góra, Jelenia GóraLwówek, Lubań, Złotoryja, Jawor, Milicz, Górowski, Głogów;
  • Lubuskiein the following counties: Strzelce-Drezden, Międzyrzecz, Świebodzin, Zielona Góra, Zielona GóraNowa Sól, Wschowski;
  • Greater Poland;
  • Łódź;
  • Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeshipoutside northern counties;
  • Masovian Voivodeshipoutside the extreme southern counties;
  • Podlasiein the following counties: Białystok, BiałystokŁomża, Łomża, Zambrowski, Wysokie Mazowieckie, Siemiatycze, Hajnówka, Bielsko;
  • Lublin Provincein the following counties: Biała Podlaska, Biała PodlaskaWłodawa, Parczew, Lubartów, Rycki, Łuków, Radzyński.

In the mentioned regions, light freezing rain causing black ice is forecast in places.

In the southern areas of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, warnings will apply from midnight to 4 a.m. on Thursday. In the south of this voivodeship and in the northern counties of the Lublin region and the southern part of the Łódź region, alarms will be in force from 3 a.m. to 7 a.m. on Thursday. In other regions of the Lublin and Łódź Voivodeships and in Greater Poland, Podlasie, Warmia and Masuriathe Łódź region and the Lublin region, warnings will be in force from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Thursday.

First degree IMWM warnings – icing

Difficult road conditions due to icy conditions will occur in the following voivodeships:

  • Silesianexcluding western counties (where warnings will be in force from 6 p.m. on Wednesday to 6 a.m. on Thursday);
  • Lesser Poland (where in the eastern regions the warnings will be in force from 9 p.m. on Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday, and in the remaining areas from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday);
  • Podkarpackiein the following counties: Lubaczów, Jarosław, Przeworsk, Leżajsk, Łańcut, Rzeszów, RzeszówNiańskie, Stalowowolski, Tarnobrzeg, Tarnobrzeg, Kolbuszowski, Mielec, Dębicki, Ropczyce-Sędziszowski (where warnings will be in force from 9 p.m. on Wednesday to 6 a.m. on Thursday);
  • Świętokrzyskie (where warnings will be in force from 6 p.m. on Wednesday to 6 a.m. on Thursday);
  • Lublin Province (where in the southern regions the warnings will be in force from 8 p.m. on Wednesday to 8 a.m. Thursday, and in the remaining areas from 9 p.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday);
  • Masovian Voivodeshipin the following counties: Garwoliński, Kozienice, Zwoleń, Lipski, Radom, RadomSzydłowiec, Przysucha, Białobrzegi, Siedlce, SiedlceŁosicki, Sokołów (where warnings will be in force from 8 p.m. on Wednesday to 8 a.m. on Thursday);
  • Podkarpackiein the following poviats: Siemiatycze, Bielsko, Wysokie Mazowieckie, Hajnówka, Białystok, Białystok (where warnings will be in force from 8 p.m. on Wednesday to 8 a.m. on Thursday).

It is forecast that the wet surface of roads and sidewalks will freeze after rainfall, sleet and wet snow, causing them to become icy. The minimum temperature will be from -4 degrees C to -1 degrees C, the minimum temperature at the ground will be from -5 degrees C to -2 degrees C.

What is a first degree meteorological warning?

By definition IMWM the first level warning provides for conditions conducive to the occurrence of dangerous meteorological phenomena that may cause material losses and pose a threat to health and life. Conducting business in conditions of exposure to these factors is difficult and dangerous. Expect difficulties resulting from carrying out activities in the hazardous area, including delays caused by road traffic, disruptions to outdoor events or the possibility of their cancellation. Caution is recommended, the need to follow messages and developments in the weather situation.
