Snow and freezing rain reached Great Britain, causing major traffic disruptions. Runways were closed at Manchester and Liverpool airports due to heavy rainfall. Some residents are struggling with a lack of electricity. Some areas of the country are under orange weather alerts.
Areas of northern England, the Midlands and Wales are expected to suffer the most from the winter forecast. According to forecasts, 20 to 40 centimeters of snow may fall in places by Sunday. Orange and yellow weather alerts have been issued for parts of the country.
Runways at Manchester and Liverpool airports were temporarily closed in the early hours of Sunday morning while airport workers worked to clear the snow. Previously, the runways at Birmingham Airport were also temporarily closed.
Weather chaos
Flights to Bristol Airport were also suspended on Saturday evening. It resumed around midnight on Sunday, but passengers were warned that delays may occur during the day and they should contact their airline before traveling.
Wiltshire Police said the weather had “caused chaos” across the county, while police in Avon and Somerset warned of significant road disruption. Both services advised traveling only if necessary.
Energy operator National Grid reported multiple power outages. Work is underway to restore power to some areas, including Birmingham, Bristol and Cardiff.
