Air masses containing Saharan dust arrived in Poland. Their presence with the naked eye can be observed in the Tatra Mountains, where a characteristically matte and dim heaven appeared. In addition to the deterioration of visibility in the mountains, the avalanche threat associated with violent warming also increased.
According to the synoptic of TVNmeteo.pl Arleta Unton-Pyziołek, two low pressure centers are responsible for the influx of hot and polluted air from Sahara: than Darius from the center of Scandinavia and Mediterranean developing in the Genoese bay. The presence of Saharan dust is felt in the southern regions of Poland. IN Tatras A dim and matte sky appeared.
– This is a visible effect of the presence of Saharan dust, whose culmination falls on Thursday and covered the southern part of the country – says Agnieszka Prasek from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management.
“Other impression on observation”
Saharan dust consists mainly of particles of sand and mineral dust lifted through the ripple of the desert and transported by atmospheric circulation to the north. This phenomenon is not new – it occurs periodically, usually in spring. Last year, we also observed the presence of dust over the Tatras
– Dust can affect air quality, and also give other impressions when observing mountain panorama – emphasizes Prasek and adds that in the following days the phenomenon will begin to weaken, because we will get under the influence of lowlands. Then the so -called Dirty rain, and sediment will appear in the snow in the upper parts of the Tatra Mountains.
In the peak parties of the Tatra Mountains in the snow you will be able to see yellowish traces that will cause Saharan dust settlement. In turn, at sunset, the sky will have a different color.

“So -called ground avalanches are possible”
Along with dust, very warm air masses came to Poland, which brought rapid warming in the Tatra Mountains. On Kasprowy Wierch on Thursday morning thermometers showed 6 degrees Celsius, and in the Five Polish Ponds valley up to 10 degrees C. Zakopane Thermometers will show over 20 degrees C. The temperature combined with a strong wind caused a quick melting of the snow cover – on Kasprowy Wierch during the week it dropped 40 centimeters – now the snow layer at the top is already 65 cm. The Tatra Volunteer Ambulance Ambulance has warned that such conditions can increase the avalanche threat.
“High temperatures during the day deteriorate the current avalanche.
