We do not support those who undermine the rule of law or forcibly occupy the buildings of public institutions, said Richard Grenell, US President Donald Trump's envoy for special missions, quoted by the Voice of America radio station. This is the first reaction of the new American administration to the mass protests in Serbia.
“It is important to speak up and be heard. However, everyone must condemn violence and demonstrate peacefully. We do not support those who undermine the rule of law or forcibly occupy public buildings. Do not resort to violence,” wrote Richard Grenell, special envoy USA to the Balkans during Trump's first term.
The official posted an entry on the X platform, commenting on a recording of a demonstration of several thousand people in Zrenjanin in the north-east Serbia.
Massive protests in Serbia
This is the first reaction of the new US administration to the ongoing protests in Serbia for almost three months mass protests and student occupation of over 60 university departments. Demonstrations are a response to tragedy at the train station in Novi Sadwhere 15 people died when part of the building's roof collapsed.
The protesters are demanding that those responsible for the disaster be held politically and criminally accountable, those who attacked people taking part in peaceful demonstrations be punished, and the publication of all documents that may help explain the causes of the tragedy. Most of the activities are organized by Serbian students.

President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic described the events a week ago as a “color revolution” in which “foreign agents” are involved.
In 2023, Vucic awarded Grenell the Order of the Flag of Serbia, first degree, for “outstanding contributions to the development and strengthening of peaceful cooperation and friendly relations between Serbia and the USA.”
