Snow and ice on the roads. IMWM warnings

The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management warns against icing in the south and southeast of Poland. In some parts of the country, there are also alerts related to heavy snowfall. Hazardous conditions are expected to persist until Thursday morning.

The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management issued first-degree warnings on a three-level, increasing scale.

IMWM warnings – heavy snowfall

First degree alerts against heavy snowfall are in force in the following voivodeships:

  • Pomeranianin the following counties: Słupsk, SłupskLębork, Bytów, Człuchów, Chojnicki;
  • West Pomeranian Voivodeshipin the following counties: Sławno, Koszalin, KoszalinSzczecinek, Drawsko, Świdwin, Białogard, Kołobrzeg, Łobez, Gryfice, Kamien, Goleniów, Świnoujście.

Snowfall is forecast, causing the snow cover to increase by 10-15 centimeters in some places. The warnings will be valid until 9 a.m. on Thursday.

IMWM warnings – icing

First degree warnings against icing apply in the following voivodeships:

  • Świętokrzyskie;
  • Silesianoutside the following counties: Racibórz, Wodzisław, Pszczyna, Jastrzębie-Zdrój, Cieszyn, Bielsko, Bielsko-BiałaCieszyn, Żywiec;
  • Lesser Polandoutside the counties: Sucha, Nowy Targ, Tatra, Nowy Sącz, Nowy SączGorlice;
  • Podkarpackiein the following counties: Jasło, Krosno, KrosnoSanok, Lesko, Bieszczady;
  • Lublin Provincein the southern half of the voivodeship.

In these regions, wet road surfaces and sidewalks are expected to freeze after rain, sleet and wet snow, causing them to become icy. The air temperature will drop to approximately 0 degrees Celsius, and at the ground to -2 degrees C. Alarms will expire at 8 on Thursday.

What are IMWM first degree warnings?

When IMWM announces a first degree warning, conditions are expected to favor the occurrence of dangerous meteorological phenomena that may cause material losses and pose a threat to health and life. Conducting business in conditions of exposure to these factors is difficult and dangerous. Expect difficulties resulting from carrying out activities in the hazardous area, including delays caused by traffic disruptions, disruptions to outdoor events or the possibility of their cancellation. Caution is recommended, the need to follow messages and developments in the weather situation.
