This Saturday, around noon, you will be able to see a partial solar eclipse from Poland. To observe this phenomenon, you should prepare in advance. We suggest how to watch them safely.

On Saturday, we will be able to see a partial solar eclipse from Poland. The beginning of the phenomenon will occur around 11.50, the maximum will take place around 12.28, and the whole will end just after 13. How to safely watch this phenomenon? First of all – as the promoter of astronomy Karol Wójcicki writes – let's not look at the sun without protection.

How to safely watch a partial solar eclipse

When observing the solar eclipse, remember not to look at it directly, because it may cause permanent vision. The best tools for observing this phenomenon are special glasses or sun filters for optical instruments. “Baader foil glasses will be useful for observation,” wrote astronomy popularizer. If you plan to view the eclipse through the camera lens, telescope or binoculars, it is necessary to use a special ND5 filter for the lens. In this case, the foil glasses are not enough – sunlight focused by the lenses, gets through the foil and damage the eye.

If we do not have eclipse glasses, we can use welding glass with a darkening degree at least 14 or view them indirectly. Instead of looking directly at the sun, we can affect his image to another surface, for example with a punching card or a colander.

Under no circumstances should you watch the eclipse through sunglasses, CD, smoky glass or X -ray. These tools do not protect our eyes from harmful solar radiation.

Where will be the best conditions for observation

A partial eclipse will be visible from all over Poland, but to varying degrees. The best conditions will prevail in the northwest of the country, in Świnoujście. The moon will cover up to 16.5 percent of the sun shield. “In Warsaw, it is only 7.3 percent, and in the southeast, for example in Rzeszów – only 3.6 percent. Not much? Sure. But with a cloudless sky the phenomenon will be clear – and certainly worth attention” – emphasized Karol Wójcicki.
