A 40-year-old man suspected of stalking and making criminal threats against his ex-partner faces up to eight years in prison. He was already banned from approaching her, and now he was temporarily arrested.
The 33-year-old had felt threatened for a long time. Her former partner persistently harassed and threatened her. Therefore, a few months ago, the prosecutor banned the 40-year-old from approaching and contacting the victim and placed him under police supervision.
He broke the ban and was arrested
– Unfortunately, the man did not comply with the preventive measures, said the police spokeswoman in Maków Mazowiecki on Wednesday. Monika Winnik. He continued to stalk his victim, follow her around, send her messages and threaten her. – On Tuesday, a 40-year-old man suspected of stalking and criminal threats was arrested. He heard the prosecutor's charges, and the court issued a decision on his temporary arrest for two months, she added.
This is a crime punishable by a very severe penalty
Stalking is persistent harassment or persecution of the victim by approaching, calling at different times, making the so-called silent calls, sending letters or e-mails, intimidation. Stalkers often hang out near the victim's home or workplace, try to establish contact through third parties, break into the victims' houses or cars, or buy them unwanted gifts.
All such activities to be considered a crime, they must take place persistently, against the will and despite the strong opposition of the addressee. The conditions for fulfilling the criteria for the crime of stalking are that: Through harassment, the perpetrator arouses in the injured party a sense of threat that is justified by the circumstances.
According to the Penal Code, stalking is a punishable offense imprisonment of up to eight years, and in some cases even up to 15 years.
In the case of persistent harassment, very often the only way to fight the stalker is to report the crime to the police. The police advise victims to keep evidence of the crime committed against them, e.g. text messages, e-mails, letters, recordings.
