An earthquake with a magnitude of 7 occurred on Thursday off the northern coast of the US state of California. The tremors were felt in San Francisco.
The strong earthquake was recorded 63 kilometers west of the city of Ferndale, California, which lies in a sparsely populated part of California's northern coast. It had a magnitude of 7. According to the United States Geological Survey, the hypocenter occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The tremors were felt in and around San Francisco. Traffic was suspended in both directions through the underwater tunnel between San Francisco and Oakland.
Tsunami warnings were in effect
The National Tsunami Warning Center has issued tsunami warnings. They were in effect from Dunes City, Oregon, to San Francisco and San Jose, California.
Before the alerts were lifted, about 4.7 million people in California and Oregon were under tsunami warnings, the National Weather Service said.
As a result of the earthquake, approximately 19,000 households in Humboldt County were left without electricity.
