The death toll from floods and landslides caused by Typhoon Yagi in Myanmar has surpassed 400, AFP reported Tuesday, citing a statement from the country's ruling junta. The element wreaked havoc in several Asian countries in the first half of September.

Typhoon Yagi has ripped through northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Burma, killing hundreds of people. The death toll in the last of these countries is the highest, with a new report saying 419 people were killed. The previous report said 226 people were dead and 77 were missing.

As explained by the AFP agency, difficulties in reaching the areas affected by the natural disaster meant that information about the number of victims reached us very slowly.

Nearly one million injured

According to the United Nations (UN), in Burma alone, the tragic effects of Typhoon Yagi were felt by as many as 887,000 people. According to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the typhoon caused the worst flooding in Burma's recent history.
