The Taliban congratulated the Syrian people and rebels for overthrowing the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. They expressed hope for “the transfer of power in line with the aspirations of the Syrian people” and an end to foreign “interference” in Syria's internal affairs.
A statement on this matter was issued by the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs after Syrian rebels captured Damascus and overthrew President Assad.
“We express hope that the transfer of power will be carried out in line with the aspirations of the Syrian people, paving the way for an independent, nation-serving and Islamic government,” the statement read.
“We encourage the adoption of a constructive foreign policy that will enable Syria to progress without external interference,” it added.
On Sunday morning, Syrian rebels announced the capture of the capital Damascus and the overthrow of Assad, who had held authoritarian power over the country for 24 years. Assad was supported by, among others, Russia, Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah, supported by Tehran.
