Colorful, dancing lights appeared on Wednesday evening over Masuria. It was a northern lights. This phenomenon is easiest to observe around the North and South Pole, but as you can see, sometimes it also appears in Poland.

Aurora polar – how it arises

The northern lights are a light phenomenon that arises when the oil -sent gas particles sent by the sun hit the upper layer of the atmosphere of the Earth at high speed (up to 72 million kilometers per hour). The planet is protected from a “attack” thanks to its magnetic field. It redirects particles towards the North and South Pole, and the particles interact with gases in our atmosphere.

Zorza occurs mainly in the area of ​​the North and South Pole. The scientific name of the polar aurora is Aurora Borealis (near the North Pole) and Aurora Australis (near the South Pole). It comes from the name of the Roman goddess of dawn Aurora.

This phenomenon is called the dance of colorful lights: blue, green, purple, pink, red, yellow and white – depending on which gases it interactions. Oxygen secretes the green and red light, nitrogen shines on burgundy and purple, hydrogen and helium in blue and purple. It can have different forms – rays, curtains, bands, arches. The northern lights are best seen at night, even though it is formed thanks to the sun.
