The avalanche danger level in the Tatra Mountains has been increased from first to second. Snow fell heavily in the mountains at night, and there is already 45 centimeters of snow on Kasprowy Wierch. Difficult conditions also prevail in the Beskids. Rescuers appeal for caution.

The second, moderate level of avalanche danger means that triggering an avalanche is usually possible with a heavy additional load, especially on steep slopes. Spontaneous occurrence of very large avalanches is unlikely. The temperature at the top dropped to -15 degrees Celsius.

The Tatra National Park (TPN) services inform that the trails, especially those above the upper forest border, are completely covered with snow, are impenetrable and their course is not visible. This, combined with the low cloud ceiling, can lead to loss of orientation in the field and getting lost. In some places there are deep drifts of snow blown by the wind.

If we are going to higher parts Tatra Mountainswe should have extensive experience in winter tourism, the ability to assess the local avalanche risk, and select the route appropriately. It is necessary to have winter equipment such as crampons, ice ax, helmet and avalanche ABC.

TPN appeals not to enter the ponds because the ice is thin in places and may break. Unfortunately, some tourists still enter the surface of Morskie Oko.

Difficult conditions in the Beskids

Conditions are also difficult on the hiking trails in the Beskids. There was more snow during the night. There is also a strong wind. There is ice under a layer of fresh snow. Crawling hands are necessary to hike. It was from -7 to -10 degrees in the mountains on Saturday morning, said mountaineering experts from the station in Szczyrk.

Visibility in the mountains is limited. The time to complete the routes, which is indicated on the maps, may be significantly longer in the current conditions. “We appeal to people not to go to the mountains alone, especially in winter,” mountaineering experts said.

The first avalanche danger level applies in the Babia Góra area. It occurs mainly in places of increased snow accumulation under the influence of very strong winds, especially on grassy ground. The snow cover is uneven and increases with altitude. In Markowe Szczawiny it is 35 cm, and in the peak areas up to 60 cm. In places, in blown places, there is 100 cm of snow.

Perć Akademików, the yellow trail from Górny Płaj to Babia Góra, is closed until spring. This is the most difficult trail in the Beskids. It is one-way, approach-oriented.

Tourists who go hiking in the mountains must be well prepared. Sturdy footwear and warm clothing are particularly important. In the current conditions, crampons are necessary, and if someone is going to Babia Góra – also crampons. Sticks may come in handy. The phone should be charged and have the “Rescue” application installed. It is worth taking a powerbank. A flashlight may also be useful. It gets dark early. Goprists remind skiers to warm up before the descent.

Tourists can use the cable cars.

In the event of an accident in the mountains, you can call GOPR by calling the free emergency telephone number: 985 or 601 100 300.
