In a T-shirt and underwear, a firefighter from the Volunteer Fire Department in Brdów ran to the fire station to be on time for the action. The locks in his car were frozen, so instead of struggling, he drove away as he was standing. His colleagues from the firehouse say “great respect for him” and boast that they assembled a team for this action in four minutes.

“We are always ready for action” – assured firefighters from the Volunteer Fire Department in Brdów (Greater Poland Voivodeship) and showed a recording showing how, just four minutes after the alarm, they assembled the entire crew and set off for action.

“Today, the time to get to the incident was minimal. We went GBA (a type of fire extinguishing vehicle – ed.) to the collision that took place in front of our fire station. The weather conditions were not favorable, and when the siren sounded, the road was slippery and the windows were frozen. However, the team stayed staffed in less than 4 minutes from the alarm,” the team wrote.

The recording shows how they appear one by one in the parking lot in front of the fire station. One of them ran literally as he was standing: in a T-shirt and underwear.

“I immediately jumped up and ran out”

– It happened that I was sleeping off the whole week and at exactly 8:06 I heard a siren. I immediately jumped up and ran out as I was standing, in a T-shirt and underwear. I wanted to go by car, but the locks were frozen. I struggled for a while and decided that it makes no sense, you have to run as you stand, said Norbert Sompolski, a 20-year-old firefighter, to tvn24.pl.

It is exactly 320 meters from the house to the fire station. Despite the winter weather, he crossed them barefoot. – A neighbor later told me that there was some frost on the road because he saw my footprints – added the firefighter.

This is not the first such “action” performed by this friend. – Time is of the essence, so it happens that you go to the unit exactly where you are. But in fact, other such situations usually took place in the summer and I was still wearing flip-flops then, he admitted.

Norbert went to the action with his entire team. All crew members reached the unit in just 4 minutes. Their current record is 2 minutes and 45 seconds.

“Each Volunteer Fire Department unit has a different specificity”

How quickly do firefighters need to be ready? Karol Grajewski from the Wronki Volunteer Fire Department says that a lot depends on the week, day and even time of day.

– Each Volunteer Fire Department unit has a different specificity and a different number of firefighters ready to take action throughout the day. With a relatively small number of crew members in the unit and assuming that most of them are at work or performing other duties, a response to the incident within 4 minutes can be considered an excellent result. The general rules adopted are that units in the National Rescue and Firefighting System should report combat readiness within 5 minutes, and units outside the National System within 10 minutes, he explained.

He dreams of serving in the State Fire Service

Time is one thing, commitment is another. This cannot be denied to the lads from the Volunteer Fire Department in Brdów. Comments from residents appeared under the video published by firefighters. “Actions, not words, are key. Nobody talks here, only acts,” wrote Mr. Piotr. “This is sacrificing yourself for another person. Full respect for the boy,” added Mr. Jerzy.

Norbert Sompolski has ambitions to join the State Fire Service. He is 20 years old, but he has been associated with the Volunteer Fire Department since he was ten. He has been participating in campaigns for two years. As he says, he has already completed 100 rescue and firefighting missions.

– My dream is to join the State Fire Service. I have already completed HDS courses (medium technical rescue vehicle – ed.), I have a category C and C+E driving license, a course in operating mobile platforms mounted on fire trucks, a motorboat helmsman course and a first rescuer course in first aid. I hope I will succeed, he said.
