Rafał Trzaskowski promises women that he – unlike Karol Nawrocki – will sign the law liberalizing access to abortion if he becomes president. Karol Nawrocki says “no” even to a return to the so-called abortion compromise. The candidate of the Civic Coalition claims that he is neither turning left nor right, but that for him “the most important thing is the means and the most important thing is common sense.”
Rafał Trzaskowski in Kętrzyn in Masuria clearly spoke about the act liberalizing abortion law.
– I am ready to sign the bill as soon as it is ready, as soon as it is voted on – announced presidential candidate Rafał Trzaskowski.
This is not a surprise, because changing the abortion law is among the hundred promises of the Civic Coalition. At the very beginning of the election campaign, such a declaration is intended to clearly show that Rafał Trzaskowski will not hide his views in his pocket.
– We will always be with women. And we will always fight for women's rights – emphasized Rafał Trzaskowski at the rally.
– Rafał Trzaskowski stands on the side of women, he is credible in this, because he has proven it many times – commented Kamila Gasiuk-Pihowicz, MEP of the Civic Coalition.
Karol Nawrocki against the abortion compromise
The Civic Coalition emphasizes that the candidate proposed by PiS has a completely different opinion on abortion. – My views are pro-life – said Karol Nawrocki, president of the Institute of National Remembrance.
Karol Nawrocki clearly declared that, if he were president, he would not even sign a law restoring the so-called abortion compromise, i.e. the legal status before probably the most controversial judgment of the Constitutional Tribunal in recent years. – I cannot sign the compromise of the 1990s, he said.
This is the first weekend of the official election campaign. Election committees all over Poland are collecting signaturesMichał Tracz/Fakty TVN
Without changing the law and without the president's signature, the regulations that de facto completely prohibit termination of pregnancy will not change in Poland. Hundreds of thousands of Poles protested on the streets against tightening access to abortion.
– We are for women's rights. We want this medieval regulation, supported by Karol Nawrocki, to cease to function. This is a good signal for women that Rafał Trzaskowski supports all their demands – said Maciej Wróbel, deputy minister of culture and national heritage from the Civic Coalition.
Some say he is turning left, others say he is winking at far-right voters
When Rafał Trzaskowski talks about women's rights and civil partnerships, some people comment that he is turning left. When he proposes withdrawing allowances from the Family 800 plus program for Ukrainians who do not work, others say he is winking at far-right voters.
– Rafał Trzaskowski copies many program demands from the Confederation's program – said Anna Bryłka, MEP of the Confederation.
– However, the Left is consistent and expressive in all this – pointed out Andrzej Szejna, deputy minister of foreign affairs from the Left.
What does Trzaskowski himself say about this? The answer was also given in Kętrzyn. – Whatever I do, whatever I say, some people either say: this is left-wing, he goes to the left, or they say: this is right-wing, he goes to the right. And for me, the most important thing is the means and the most important thing is common sense – said Rafał Trzaskowski at the rally.
– We are guided primarily by what is natural, the interests of Poles and a large dose of rationality – said Kamila Gasiuk-Pihowicz.
What does the KO candidate stand for?
Rafał Trzaskowski repeated that he supports increasing defense spending, fighting global warming and illegal waste dumps.
– We are dealing with global warming. If you don't know this, it is a matter of education, because it is not a matter of views – said Rafał Trzaskowski.
After visiting Podlasie and Masuria, the Civic Coalition's candidate for president met on Sunday with local government officials in Lidzbark Warmiński and with the residents of Elbląg. He talked there about completing the investment in the Vistula Spit and the waterway to the port.
– PiS prepared a total botch, propaganda projects, it was difficult to agree with them. However, at the moment, fortunately, we have a chance to complete this project in a completely rational version – said Rafał Trzaskowski.
