A doctor who attacked the patient with a knife in Krakow. Doctor Jacek Wawrzynek and Professor Jarosław Fedorowski admitted in “Facts after Facts” on TVN24 that they themselves often met with aggression on the part of their patients.
The doctor of the Krakow University Hospital was attacked on Tuesday before noon. A 35-year-old man burst into the office where the orthopedist examined the patient and attacked the doctor with a knife. The doctor, despite the efforts of medical staff, died. The attacker was a patient dissatisfied with the course of treatment.
Dr. Wawrzynek: I have often encountered aggression
Doctor of Medical Sciences Jacek Wawrzynek (Silesian Medical University, Foundation Conscious Medic) noted in “Facts after Facts” that medical employees “on the front line must face more often with aggression: at the emergency room, emergency departments or in medical rescue teams.” – Nobody expects medical staff attacked in a clinic or in a pediatric ward, but, as we can see, unfortunately such situations begin to take place – he admitted.
– In my many years of practice in emergency medical teams I have often encountered aggression – added Wawrzynek.

Dr. Wawrzynek admitted that “you cannot prepare” for possible aggression on the part of the patient and “there are no reasonable legislative solutions that would ensure the safety of the general medical staff.” – After the death of a paramedic in January in Siedlce, a team was created very quickly to deal with the safety of medical staff in pre -hospital care. Several elements were developed. One of them are knife -resistant vests – reminded the guest of TVN24.
According to him, however, knives are “a small brick of this wall, which is to ensure safety.”

Professor Fedorowski: Nurses are the most common victims of violence
Professor Jarosław Fedorowski, president of the Polish Federation of Hospital, also met with aggression on the part of patients. – I was unpleasant to be a victim of patient aggression. Once in the United States, the patient condemned me with his blood, and he was sick with AIDS. It was intentional, I refused to give him a drug – he said.
– In Poland, however, I once had to, thanks to knowledge of judo, to neutralize a patient who attacked nurses. Nurses are the most common victims of violence in the healthcare system – emphasized Professor Fedorowski.
The president of the Polish Polish Federation of Hospital said that the most common causes of aggression are frustration, side effects of taking drugs or abuse of drugs, as well as people with mental disorders.
The professor pointed out that, according to research, up to 80 percent of medical workers experienced various manifestations of aggression.

Safety gates in hospitals?
Guests of “facts after facts” were also asked what security measures could be introduced in medical facilities.
Dr. Wawrzynek said that “the button of calling for help in the office seems to be an element after the fact.” – I can't imagine that before entering the clinic, doctor's office or even to the emergency department, there were goals as at the airport. (…) We assume, however, that society trusts us and it does not want to hurt us either. And unfortunately, as you can see, such incidental situations appear – said the doctor.
Professor Fedorowski, in turn, assessed that “we are going towards security control at the entrance to the hospital”. – We currently have practically no legal tools in hospitals to even check what the patient is wearing – he added.
