Not long ago, we enjoyed the ability to download movies in just a few minutes. Today, operators are announcing something much bigger. The 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) organization was approved by the official 6G logo, which was presented in May this year, giving a clear signal – the sixth generation of mobile Internet is slowly becoming a reality.
Cosmic speeds
But what does this actually mean for the average user? The simplest way saying – internet one hundred times faster than current 5G, with speeds up to 1 terabit per second. It's like moving from a bicycle to a jet. We can download a movie in 8K in the blink of an eye. Games in the cloud? The delays should no longer be noticeable at all. And this is just the beginning of the possibilities.
No more lack of coverage
Today, we still complain about the lack of coverage in many places outside the city – and even here we often encounter poor connectivity. With 6G, this problem will disappear once and for all. All thanks to the connection of ordinary transmitters with a network of satellites. The sea, the mountains, the middle of the desert – the goal is to provide much better availability and performance compared to previous generations.
Artificial intelligence and holograms like in “Star Wars”
New the network will work closely with AI that will optimize transmission and traffic management. This will pave the way to truly smart cities, where everything – from traffic lights to waste management systems – will work together in real time. There is also talk of an introduction holographic communication. Apparently, thanks to huge bandwidth and minimal delays, three-dimensional images of interlocutors will be able to be transmitted in real time. Let us remember, however, that the 6G network is still in the development phase and many of its capabilities are at the conceptual stage.
6G and ecology
The telecommunications industry has also taken environmental issues to heart. 6G is expected to consume much less energy than previous generations. This is not only about saving electricity – the network is also supposed to help in better management of natural resources.
When will all this appear?
The first 6G networks are scheduled to launch around 2030. However, it will probably take another few years before the technology becomes widespread. How many of all the announcements will actually be implemented and will they change the way we live and work? We'll see about that later.
