Protest of high school students from the school complex at Paderewskiego in Sulejówek (Masovian Voivodeship). After the mayor dismissed the school principal, many students did not come to classes as a sign of solidarity with the teacher. After being notified by the mayor about irregularities in the facility that constituted grounds for dismissal, the prosecutor's office conducts the investigation. We have unofficially determined that at this stage of the proceedings there is no evidence that a crime has occurred.

On Friday, a day after the dismissal of the school's director, Jolanta Oniszk-Palacz, more than half of the students did not come to school on Friday. – Attendance in many classes is 30-40 percent, we hear from one of the teachers. Students do not agree with the decision made by Arkadiusz Śliwa, the mayor of Sulejówek.

Inspection and investigation by the prosecutor's office

According to the mayor, the basis for terminating the contract with the facility's director immediately were the results of the inspection carried out last year. – Financial irregularities, falsification of documents and lack of inventory, as well as increasingly poorer teaching results were found – says Arkadiusz Śliwa in an interview with tvnwarszawa.pl. The mayor also assures that he received a positive opinion from the education board before deciding to resign.

In November, Śliwa submitted a report to the prosecutor's office. Our findings show that these were supposed to be general allegations regarding the school's activities. The prosecutor's office only started its investigation in January, after completing the documentation. – It is conducted pursuant to Articles 231 and 276 of the Penal Code (abuse of powers and destruction or concealment of documents – editor's note) and focuses on irregularities in keeping school records – says prosecutor Magdalena Wieczorek, head of the District Prosecutor's Office in Mińsk Mazowiecki. – The investigation is ongoing, which means that no one has been charged – he adds.

According to our sources, at this stage of the proceedings, prosecutors did not find evidence that there were any irregularities at the school that would qualify as a crime punishable by criminal liability.

A dispute between the mayor and the director

The teachers and parents we talked to indicate that the relationship between the mayor and the principal deteriorated after the mayor's son (he is a student at the school) received a negative grade for his behavior for six months. The reason for giving the lowest grade was allegedly a joke in which, pretending to be a representative of one of the uniformed services, together with a group of friends, high school students notified a school graduate that he was urgently called up to the army, as a result of which the man stopped work and went to the place indicated in the conversation. address of the military formation. – Giving my son a bad grade for the first semester had no influence on my decision – mayor Arkadiusz Śliwa puts an end to the speculations. – Since the case concerns a student, I do not want to comment on it – says Jolanta Oniszk-Palacz, the former director.

The mayor explains the reason for the inspection, which began in June last year and lasted until the end of September, with the city's increased spending on education and the resulting need to “strengthen control.”

They will announce a competition for the director

Currently, the school is managed by a deputy principal. – A new competition for the position of director will be announced on Monday – announces the mayor of Śliwa. He explains that the decision on the selection rests with the 12-person competition commission, in which office representatives have three votes. The others were representatives of the school board, the pedagogical council, the trade union and the Polish Teachers' Union. – I hope that the new principal will take over his duties smoothly and calm the tense situation at the school – says the mayor.

The dismissed director will also be able to take part in the new competition. On Thursday, a few hours after receiving the decision to appeal, she said that she did not agree with the mayor's allegations, that she needed to consult the matter with a lawyer and that she had not yet decided whether she would appeal to the court.

Mayor's visit, gas in the corridor

There was a tense situation at the school in Sulejówek on Thursdayafter the mayor personally handed the notice of termination to the director around noon. Some students gathered at the door of the office, and pepper spray was most likely sprayed in the crowd. Several police crews and an emergency medical team arrived at the scene and provided assistance to three people. Students also surrounded the mayor's car, blocking it from leaving the school parking lot. Later, on the school playground, there was an emotional exchange of words between the youth and the mayor.

A city council meeting was to be held at the school in the afternoon. One of the points was the liquidation of the Secondary School Complex. Jan Paderewski, which, in addition to the general secondary school, includes a high school for adults, a technical school for advertising and commerce, a vocational school and a post-secondary school. As local government officials explained, these schools were not actually operating, and the last class of the adult high school graduates in June. According to the original announcements, the junior high school was to operate unchanged.

However, the liquidation of a school complex means that all contracts with principals, teachers and partners expire. Some teachers and parents believe that this action was really about dismissing the principal and organizing a new competition.

Ultimately, by decision of the councilors, the item regarding the liquidation of schools was removed from the meeting.
