Four people were injured in a cutter attack near the Dam Square in the center of Amsterdam – the city police said on Thursday. The perpetrator of the attack was arrested. He was also wounded and he was taken to hospital by injury. According to the police, a 26-year-old Pole is among the victims.

On Thursday afternoon, the police received a notification about a cutter attack near the Dam Square in Amsterdam in The Netherlands. The attacker wounded four people. He was also wounded himself.

“Among the 5 wounded people (…) there is a arrested suspect. This means that four people suffered in the attack” – explained the services in the press release on X.

The police said in a statement that among the victims there are: a 67-year-old woman and a 69-year-old man of American nationality, a 26-year-old man of Polish nationality, a 73-year-old woman with Belgium and a 19-year-old woman from Amsterdam.

A witness of the event helped

The police reported that the perpetrator was able to be overwhelmed with the help of a witness to the event. The cutter was arrested. Because of his leg injury, he was taken to hospital.

The motive of his action is the subject of investigation. “The police take into account the possibility that the suspect could accidentally choose victims, but the exact motive remains unknown” – he was pointed out in the communiqué.

– The police investigation is underway and currently has the highest priority. We hope that we will soon learn more details about the circumstances of this macabre attack with a knife. Our thoughts are with victims, their families and loved ones – said the mayor of the city of Femke Halsma.
