The District Prosecutor's Office in Augustów (Podlasie) initiated an investigation into the causal of a fire in the Biebrza National Park, which covered over 400 hectares and caused destruction in the plant and animal world – the District Prosecutor's Office in Suwałki said on Thursday.

The fire of dry grass and reeds broke out on Sunday afternoon at the interface between the Augustów and Moniec poviats. He covered approx. 450 ha, and according to other data 190 ha in the Biebrza National Park.

The State Fire Service announced that the situation in the park is stable, the fire does not spread, but extinguishing the fire is a long and tedious process and it will take many days or even several weeks.

The District Prosecutor's Office in Suwałki announced on Thursday that an investigation was initiated in this matter.

“He aims to clarify all circumstances related to fire, and above all to determine its cause. Due to the importance of the event, the investigation was supervised by the District Prosecutor's Office in Suwałki,” the prosecutor's office said.

Augustów police collect and secure evidence in the case. Her activities relate – a crime of bringing the direct danger of a fire, which was threatened by the life and health of many people or property in large sizes. The police ask to contact all people who may have knowledge about the circumstances of the fire.

For unintentional causing such a fire is punishable by up to 5 years in prison, and for intentional – up to 10 years.
