Heavy rainfall hit eastern Spain. In some places, more than 200 liters per square meter fell. Firefighters had their hands full that day – they pumped water out of flooded houses and basements.

Heavy rainfall occurred on Wednesday in southern Valencia and northern Alicante, Spain. The most rain fell in the commune of Alcira – 210 liters per square meter. It also rained heavily in the commune of Carcaixent, where 152 l/m2 fell. Other communes such as Pinet (137.4 l/sq m) and Barx (114 l/sq m) also recorded heavy rainfall.

Firefighters' interventions

The Spanish Meteorological Agency AEMET issued first and second level warnings for heavy rainfall on Wednesday. Firefighters had their hands full that day – they pumped water out of flooded houses and basements. In the commune of Guardamar de la Safor, they rescued a woman stuck in a flooded car.

Some streets in Valencia and Alicante turned into lakes, making cars unable to drive through them. Workers could not enter construction sites due to flooding. In the commune of Cullera, a burst pipe closed a street and cut off the water supply.

Most of the heavy rainfall hit coastal areas. – It doesn't rain often here, but when it does, it rains very heavily in a short period of time – said one of the residents of the Daimús commune.
