There may be no eggs in stores. Easter promotions are in question

The director of the Chamber Katarzyna Gawrońska announced that the results of consultations with egg producers show that “consumers should not count on traditional spring price promotions related to Christmas.” She assured at the same time that The egg industry is doing everything to prevent an excessive price increase.

According to Kipdip estimates, from the Polish market in connection with the flu and official combating this disease in the last months of last year (October – December 2024), about 1.7 million laying hens disappeared from production. This year, 5 large herds were also liquidated by utilizing a total of over 4.3 million laying of laying – the director explained.

– As if that was not enough, the previous year was characterized by a much less tendency of the industry to increase the population. Kipdip analysts estimate that due to the lack of the desire to grow production, the number of hens maintained in Poland fell by almost 5 million pieces. All this means that the supply of eggs in our country this spring may be smaller by up to 20 percent compared to the Easter period last year – said Gawrońska.

As the director noted, the influenza of birds affected the two largest Polish bugs of egg production, i.e. central and western Greater Poland and northern Mazovia. In addition, farms that effectively fought the virus and were theoretically ready to resume production, could not do it because the virus appeared on neighboring farms.

Egg prices have been rising since August 2024. According to the data of the Ministry of Agriculture (integrated system of agricultural market information), in the last week of December 2024, the average sales prices in packaging were: Class L – cage Chances of 71.63 PLN/100 pcs; Molfyy 0 84.47 PLN/100 pcs; Free paddock 86.46/100 pcs.

As Gawrońska donated in January and in February 2025 the prices “sharply went up”, the eggs got up to several dozen percent.

The flu of birds attacks not only Poland. Its outbreaks appear in large producers throughout Europe and the United States, where the stolen of the hens decreased to a similar extent as in Poland. This situation causes pressure to increase egg prices.

The head of the Chamber indicated that the situation in Poland is better due to the relatively larger margin of production surpluses in relation to internal needs.

– There are about 1.25 chickens in the United States, and in Poland there are almost 1.5 chickens. Unfortunately, the situation is changing, bird flu is still present in our country and it is not known if it will not be worse – said Gawrońska.

American stores already lack eggs because of bird flu. Some networks have introduced restrictions. Since 2022, over 140 million breeding birds died there due to bird flu, of which 17 million only in November and December last year.

Which is why United States increase imports with Turkey. According to American Farm Bureau Federation, Türkiye is the only country from which the United States import eggs. According to the US Department of Agriculture, in 2024 the United States imported 71 million eggs from Turkey. This year's import will be almost six times larger.

Türkiye is the fifth largest egg exporter in the world, after The NetherlandsUnited States, Poland and Germany. In 2023, Türkiye exported eggs worth $ 411 million throughout the world.
