The calendar spring begins soon. The beginning of March is the perfect time to start cleaning in the garden. Shrubs, such as hydrangea, require special care. Experts in an interview with tvnmeteo.pl talk about how to care and cut these and other popular plants.
During the care of shrubs, we should first of all pay attention to their type. This is especially important, among others, in the case of hydrangea.
Hydrangeas. How to cut them in spring
– Bouquet and shrubs are cut in spring. However, we do not cut garden hydrangeas, i.e. those with spherical, colorful inflorescences. We only remove dried last year's inflorescences. We try to do it carefully so as not to damage the buds under them. Crushing hydrangeas do not require pruning – says Monika Latkowska, deputy director of the University of Warsaw Botan Garden, in an interview with tvnmeteo.pl.
The appearance of our hydrangeas will also be influenced by the place where we can cut their shoots.
– In the case of shrub hydrangea, we can cut it a little lower. She will have inflorescences on this year's growths. Thanks to this, there will be more rigid shoots, which will translate into a luxuriant growth – adds engineer Mateusz Sowolo, curator of the Botanical Garden Collection of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Cognition.
What to do to make the fruit trees bloom beautifully
Sowelo points out that when caring for garden, it is worth using plant protection products. Thanks to this, we will avoid fungal and bacterial diseases in our garden.
– Now there is a good time window to perform such a treatment with plant protection products in the case of utility varieties of cherry, apple and all fruit at the time when their buds are swollen and part – he says. He advises to disinfect the pruning shears with high -percentage alcohol when cutting cherry branches and other trees. In this way, we will avoid accidental bacterial transfer.
One of the most important issues is also regular watering. This applies not only fruit treesbut in particular evergreen shrubs such as rhododendrons.
– Even if we have an irrigation system, and we are afraid to use it because of frost, then you can start a garden hose and start watering them, because when there is intensive photosynthesis, evergreen plants breathe, and there is no water for a month, they will be terribly tired – emphasizes the expert.
According to the curator of the UAM Botanical Garden collection in Poznań, in the case of rhododendrons, it is also worth thinking about soil acidifying fertilizers. One of them is, among others, ammonium sulfate.
