Trees fell on people and cars. Dozens of people died and hundreds were injured

The super typhoon made landfall in northern Vietnam on Saturday, packing winds of more than 149 kilometers (93 miles) per hour. It wreaked havoc for about 15 hours before gradually weakening into a tropical depression early Sunday morning, the country's weather service said.

Vietnamese authorities said Sunday that at least 21 people had been killed and 229 injured. In Hanoi alone, the country's capital of 8.5 million people, three people have died since Friday after being crushed by trees. A falling tree also killed a motorcyclist in the northern province of Hai Duong. In Hoa Binh province, a landslide of rocks and mud claimed the lives of four people on Sunday morning, VNExpress reported.

Viet Nam News reported 25 boats sank off the coast of Quang Ninh Province. At least 13 fishermen are missing.

In Hanoi, there were about 2,800 cases of trees being uprooted, and dozens of vehicles and homes were destroyed.

The Vietnam News Agency also reported major damage in the northern provinces of Haiphong and Quang Ninh. It estimated that more than 3,000 homes were damaged and three million customers were left without power.

The disaster also caused destruction on an area of ​​over 116,000 hectares of land used mainly for rice and fruit cultivation.

The weather service predicts that as a result of the impact of the tropical depression, heavy rainfall, which may cause flash flooding, will continue until Monday in the northeastern region. In some places, up to 100 liters per square meter may fall, and in mountainous areas over 200 liters/sq. m.

Yagi has killed four people on Hainan Island, China's southernmost island, according to the latest Chinese authorities. The civil defense office in the Philippines, where the typhoon formed last week, updated the death toll on Sunday from 16 to 20, with another 22 people missing.

Yagi reached maximum wind speeds of 234 kilometers per hour, making it the strongest tropical cyclone in Asia so far this year. According to the Vietnam Meteorological Agency, it is the strongest storm in this country for decades.

It is also the world's second-strongest cyclone, after Atlantic Hurricane Beryl, which ripped through the Caribbean in July. Meteorologists have called Yagi a super typhoon.
