Kemal Kiricdaroglu, the candidate of the Turkish opposition, spoke after Sunday’s second round of presidential elections. The incomplete results point to his loss to Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Kiricdaroglu said it was “the most unfair election in years”, but added that it showed that there was a will in the nation to change the “authoritarian rule”. He asked his supporters to continue “the fight for democracy”.

Tens of minutes before Kiricdaroglu’s speech, Erdogan declared victory in the elections, even though at that moment only 75 percent of the ballot boxes across the country had been counted. The incumbent president said voters had given him the responsibility of running the country for the next five years. He stated that the “only winner” of the election is Türkiye as a country.

On Sunday evening in the capital of the country Ankara and many other cities, thousands of supporters of the incumbent president celebrated in the streets.
