UN Security Council. Urgent meeting after the events in Syria. At the request of Russia

The United Nations Security Council will meet urgently on Monday to discuss the issue of Syria, AFP and dpa reported, citing diplomatic sources. Russia requested to convene the meeting on Sunday.

The council is scheduled to meet in New York on Monday at 3 p.m. (9 p.m. in Poland). Russia asked to convene an urgent meeting on Sunday. This is related to the fall of the Kremlin-backed regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria.

The meeting is to be held behind closed doors.

Assad's rule overthrown

On Sunday morning, Syrian rebels announced the capture of the capital of the country, Damascus, and the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad, who had held authoritarian power over the country for 24 years.

Assad was supported by, among others, Russia, Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah, supported by Tehran. According to Russian agencies, the fallen dictator, after fleeing the country, came to Moscow, where he was given asylum.
