Although 15 degrees Celsius does not seem like a low temperature, for the inhabitants of the capital of Thailand it is real cold. That's what thermometers showed in Bangkok on Monday morning. It was even colder in the north, where surprised tourists took photos of frost on the grass – local media describe.

In January, the temperature in Bangkok usually ranges from 23 to 33 degrees Celsius. This is one of the reasons why this tourist destination is particularly popular for many people looking to escape the northern hemisphere winter. In the northern, mountainous part of Thailand, the temperature is often much lower than in the capital. In Chiang Mai province this month it averages around 15 degrees.

The coldest in years

Earlier this week, however, temperatures dropped to rarely seen lows in both Bangkok and the northern regions. In the morning, 15.2 degrees Celsius was recorded in the capital Bang Na district, which was the lowest temperature in this city since 2017, reported the Thailand Meteorological Department. 15.9 degrees Celsius was recorded at Suvarnabhumi airport.

Residents of Bangkok had to put on additional layers of clothes, sweaters and warm sweatshirts, CNN reports. – I don't remember the last time it was this cold – said a 63-year-old drinks seller on one of the streets in the city center.

So far, the lowest temperature measured in Bangkok was 9.9 degrees Celsius. This was recorded on January 12, 1955.

A rare sight for tourists

In the city of Sakon Nakhon in the province of the same name in the north-east of the country, only 6.6 degrees Celsius was recorded.

As reported by the “Bangkok Post” daily, because it was an almost unheard-of sight, tourists in Chiang Mai province near Mount Doi Inthanon, the highest peak in Thailand, took photos of frost on the grass.

According to the national weather agency, unseasonably cold weather may persist across the country until mid-February.
