Harris: I lost the election, but I didn't lose the fight
On Wednesday evening Polish time, Harris spoke publicly for the first time after her election defeat. She appeared before Howard University in Washington.
– The result of these elections is not what we wanted. This is not what we fought for, she admitted. – The light of America's promise will always shine brightly. As long as we do not give up and as long as we continue in our fight, she added.
Harris further admitted: “I know people are feeling and experiencing a lot of emotions right now. I understand that, but we have to accept the results of this election.”
– Today I talked to President-elect Trump and congratulated him on his victory. I also told him that we would help him and his team take power and participate in a peaceful transfer of power. A fundamental principle of American democracy is that when we lose an election, we accept the result. This principle, like others, distinguishes democracy from monarchy or tyranny, she continued.
– I lost the election, but I did not lose the fight that fueled our entire campaign, it is a fight for freedom, justice and dignity of every human being, it is a fight and ideals that reflect America at its best, I will never abandon this fight – she emphasized.
– I will never give up fighting for a future where Americans can realize their dreams, ambitions and aspirations, where American women can freely make decisions about their own bodies and do not have to listen to what the government tells them to do. “We will never give up in our fight to protect our schools and our streets from gun violence,” she said.
The vice president emphasized that “only when it is dark enough can we see the stars.” – I know that many of you feel that we are entering dark times, but thinking about the well-being of all of us, I hope that this is not the case. However, America, if this is the case, let's feel the sky, let's fill this sky with the light of a billion shining stars. Let us fill the sky with the light of optimism, faith, truth and service, Harris added.
