Strong storms with heavy rainfall are passing over the East Coast of the United States. Nearly 60 million people were under flood alerts, and hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses had their electricity cut off.

Nearly 700,000 homes and businesses were without power in New England and New York state on Monday, according to NBC. In Maine, some roads were blocked by fallen trees and structures. In parts of New Jersey, flooded streams and creeks turned streets into rivers.

Flood warnings in New York

New York authorities are warning of power outages, possible flooding of roads and strong winds on bridges. The city’s emergency management office (EMO) said in the aftermath storm over 10,000 inhabitants of the agglomeration had no electricity. Over 200 reports of fallen trees were received. It also warned of flash flooding in Manhattan and the Bronx.

Flood watches affecting 59 million people have been issued from Virginia to Maine. According to meteorological services, the dangerous heavy rainfall will end on Tuesday. The storm front is expected to move into Canada.

Airports reported flight delays and cancellations. According to data from FlightAware, a company monitoring the situation, over two thousand delays and over 400 flights were canceled throughout the country.
