Friends and colleagues are saying goodbye to Emilia Rennhack, née Kowalczyk, a Polish-born American police officer who died after an SUV driver crashed into a beauty salon near New York City. “Our hearts are breaking,” the New York City police union said on social media.

Emilia Rennhack was one of four people who died last Friday after a 64-year-old man he drove an SUV into the Hawaii Nail & Spa beauty salon in Deer Park on Long Island, New York. The 30-year-old officer was off duty, doing her nails for a fellow officer's wedding that was to take place the same day, the New York Post reported. In addition to Rennhack, salon owner Jiancai Chen, 37, and two of his employees, Yan Xu, 41, and Meizi Zhang, 50, were killed. Nine more people were injured, as reported by ABC News.

Emilia Rennhack, 30, who used the surname Kowalczyk before her marriage, left Poland at the age of 12, the NYPD's 102nd Precinct in Queens, New York, where she worked, said on social media. She “dreamed of becoming a police officer” – she graduated from the police academy in 2018, and three years later joined the police's domestic violence unit, where she “had a positive impact on families in need of support.”

“She made over 150 arrests during her six years on the force. She was respected by the community and her brothers and sisters at the 102nd Precinct,” the Facebook post reads. Rennhack “dedicated her life to serving and protecting our community with courage, compassion and unwavering commitment. Her dedication and commitment will never be forgotten,” the police said.

According to New York media, it was at work that she met her husband, Carl Rennhack, also an officer at the 102nd Precinct.

Steven Schwally, 64, was arrested after the crash in Deer Park. Photos posted on social media show the SUV that crashed into the beauty salon speeding through the parking lot of Hawaii Nail & Spa moments earlier. CNN reported that the man told officers at the scene that he had 18 beers the night before the incident and that he had stopped drinking alcohol around 4 a.m. Friday. He got into his car several hours later.

The man was arrested and remains in custody, the portal reported, adding that according to the Suffolk County Court, Schwally will be released after paying bail of $2 million or $1 million in cash. His hearing is scheduled for July 12.
