Pope Francis on Monday appointed a woman as prefect of a dicastery, or earlier congregation, for the first time in history. This position was taken by the Italian nun Simona Brambilla.

Simona Brambilla became the head of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life – the press office of the Holy See reported.

Until now, Sister Brambilla was the secretary of this dicastery responsible for religious life, i.e. number two of this institution of the Roman Curia.

She is the former superior general of the Missionary Sisters of the Consolation. In the years 2002-2006 she was a professor of psychology at the Pontifical Gregorian University Rome.
