Following Prime Minister Viktor Orban's attack on Poland, the letter from the chairmen of the European Union Affairs Committee, expressing concern about the first weeks of the Hungarian presidency, takes on additional significance, wrote KO senator Bogdan Klich, referring to the statement of the Hungarian head of government.

Civic Coalition Senator Bogdan Klich in his post on platform X included a letter from the heads of the parliamentary EU committees Finland, German, Lithuania, LatviaPoland, Luxembourg and Estonia to the Hungarian Chairman of the European Affairs Committee, Zoltan Tessely, in which he expressed deep concern about “the first three weeks of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU, as fundamental principles are being disregarded”.

“After today's attack on Poland by Prime Minister Orban, our letter from the Chairmen of the European Union Commission takes on additional significance,” wrote Klich.

“The role of the EU presidency is to coordinate and mediate between European governments and their interests for the common good. Instead of building bridges, the Hungarian prime minister used the first days of his presidency to provoke European partners, putting his own interests above the European consensus,” the letter reads.

The authors of the letter emphasized that the EU Council Presidency does not play an official role in foreign policy, and that European foreign policy is decided jointly by the governments of the member states. “The EU Treaties are clear, the European Union is represented abroad by the President of the European Council and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy,” it was written.

The letter noted that Viktor Orban's trips to Moscow and Beijing were not welcome. “The Hungarian prime minister is constantly weakening the position of the European Union and making it difficult to achieve peace in Ukraine. Publicly repeating the Russian president's war goals and calling them a 'peace mission' is unacceptable support for the aggressor,” it emphasized.

It also stated that “if the Hungarian government continues to troll its European partners, it will harm its own national interests in the long run.” “European governments will lose faith that the goals of the Hungarian government are in line with any European interest. This will greatly harm the goals of the Hungarian EU presidency,” the authors of the letter noted.

Orban on Poland's “hypocrisy”

On Saturday, Orban criticized the EU's and the entire West's wrong policies, as well as Poland's “hypocrisy.” Speaking from the podium of the Free Summer University in Romanian Transylvania (Transylvania), the head of the Hungarian government praised Donald Trump and defended Russia.

Speaking about Poland, Orban criticized the government in Warsaw. “Let's be honest, we've received a lot of kicks in the ass. Poles are conducting hypocritical policies. They criticize us for our relations with Russia, and they do business with Russia through intermediaries. I've never seen such hypocrisy on the part of the state,” he quoted the prime minister as saying. Hungarian Radio Europa Libera Romania portal.

Orban accused Poland of causing a change in the balance of power in Europe by weakening the Berlin-Paris axis in favor of a new configuration: London, Warsaw, Kiev, the Baltic states and Scandinavia. In this way, Poland was also to be weakened Visegrad Groupwhich in Orbán's interpretation was to be based on the recognition of a strong Germany and Russia and create a third important force.

On Sunday, Deputy Foreign Minister Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski responded to Orban's words, stating that “unlike Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, we do not do business with Russia.” He also assessed that Orban's policies are currently anti-EU, anti-Ukrainian and anti-Polish.
