Police officers from the riot police detained two men who tried to blend in with a group of Croatian fans. The Greek had a firearm with ammunition and a hidden blade, and also used a false ID card. The Georgian, in turn, hid someone else's driving license in his clothes.
Tuesday, October 15, was a busy day for the capital's police officers. Their main tasks included, among others: ensuring the safety of residents and fans who were heading to the stadium Poland – Croatia matchplayed at the National Stadium. Police patrols were in the areas of stations and public transport stops, as well as on access routes to the stadium. One of such places was the area around Rondo ONZ, where policemen from the 4th company of the prevention unit in Warsaw were on duty. They noticed two men trying to blend in with a group of Croatian fans standing on the sidewalk. Upon seeing the police car, one of them tried to leave, while the other pretended not to see the policemen.
Weapon and hidden blade
– They decided to check what was the reason for their unusual behavior. As it turned out, the first of them, a 35-year-old Georgian citizen, had someone else's driving license with him. The second man's purse, a 40-year-old Greek citizen, concealed danger. The foreigner hid a firearm with a magazine in it. He also had a hidden blade in his belt buckle and was using a fake Greek ID card. As if that wasn't enough, it turned out that the weapon found on him was listed as lost in Italy. When asked by the police where he got the gun, he replied that he had found the gun five hours earlier in a shopping mall in another district and was just going to the nearest police station to return it – says Junior Asp. BartÅ‚omiej ÅšniadaÅ‚a from the downtown police.
– Both men were detained, and the evidence collected by investigators from the Warsaw I District Police Headquarters allowed the prosecutor to bring charges against them – he adds.
Arrest for the Greek
A Greek citizen was charged with possessing weapons and ammunition without the required permit, as well as using a fake ID card. He was arrested for three months and faces up to eight years in prison. A Georgian citizen was charged with concealing a driving license that did not belong to him. He faces up to two years in prison.
The investigation into this case is being conducted by the Warsaw Śródmieście-Północ District Prosecutor's Office.
