It was hiding in an underground passage at the Warszawa Włochy stop. It was found during reconstruction. It is a historic train schedule. The find will be exhibited and will gain a glass display case.
Railway workers declare that the historic layout should be unveiled this year. In this way, they want to commemorate the history of the Warsaw railway.
A fragment of the timetable was painted on one of the walls of the underpass at the Warszawa Włochy stop. The board is about 350 centimeters wide and 250 centimeters high. It was discovered during the reconstruction of the underpass in 2014. It shows the names of several towns to which trains from the Warszawa Włochy stop used to depart, along with their running times.
They cut down the wall
In accordance with the recommendations of the conservator of monuments, the brick wall on which the decay is painted was cut out and placed in the square by the Warsaw Włochy station. It will now be secured and enclosed in a glass display case.
“The task of finding a company that would undertake the work of displaying the historic find turned out to be not so easy. What's more, every detail of the developed process of securing the board had to be consulted with the conservator of monuments. However, the preparation stage is already behind us and we are starting the construction of a glass display case, which will be built around the historic timetable,” said Karol Jakubowski from the PKP PLK press team.
He noted that conservation work will then begin on covering the board with special preparations that will help keep it in good condition for years to come. The display case will have special glazing, lighting, and an air conditioner to ensure the right temperature and humidity inside.
He may be over 80 years old
The find probably dates back to the turn of the 1940s and 1950s. The no longer existing name Zielkowice was helpful in dating the train timetable. Since 1951, the station has been called Łowicz Przedmieście.
The historic timetable is not the only object reminding us of the railway's past at the Warszawa Włochy stop. A modernist shelter looms over platform two, the history of which is connected with the electrification of this railway line in the 1930s. The building, often called the “winged shelter”, was renovated by railway workers during the modernization of the railway line from Warsaw to Grodzisk Mazowiecki. The stylized interior of the underpass also refers to the historical character of this place.
