This is what the Western Railway Station will look like after modernization

The main works on the reconstruction of the Western Railway Station are coming to an end. Railway workers will soon start technical acceptance. The underground passage has taken on a new shape, but its opening depends on the progress of work on the construction of the tram route. Passengers will only be able to use it next summer.

On Monday, representatives of PKP PLK invited journalists to the rebuilt Western Railway Station. In addition to the modernized station hall and its surroundings, they also presented a new underground passage. It is longer and wider than the previous one. It allows access to all nine platforms from Wola and Ochota. Ultimately, it will house ticket offices, waiting rooms and service premises. Currently, access to the trains is provided by a footbridge, from which you can take elevators to level zero.

Most of the information boards have already been installed in the new passage, and displays and ticket vending machines are slowly appearing in the rooms intended for ticket offices. The floor is lined with Portuguese granite slabs, while granite from Strzegom was used on the platforms.

The layout of premises intended for trade and catering is also visible. The largest of them are approximately 900 square meters and are intended for small discount stores.

When will the reconstruction of the Western Railway Station be completed?

The investment was originally supposed to be ready in 2023. Now railway workers announce that it will be fully opened to passengers only in the summer of next year. Marcin Mochocki, a member of the PKP PLK management board, said at Monday's press conference that before the end of 2024 he plans to sign the takeover protocol with the contractor – Budimex – and start accepting all parts of the investment.

– As for the railway part, it is already completed. Traffic runs on all turnouts, tracks and platforms – added Mochocki. Let us remind you that passengers can use all platforms from June this year.

Marcin Mochocki pointed out that Tramwaje Warszawskie is still working on the construction of a tram tunnel under the station. Ultimately, the underground tram stops are to connect to the railway network.

– We assume that by the end of the year all infrastructure from Tunelowa Street will be ready, including access to parking spaces and small architecture. From the Aleje Jerozolimskie side, we will complete work on a staircase equipped with an elevator, which will allow access to a footbridge connecting all platforms and both sides of the city – said Mochocki.

He emphasized that the full acceptance of the underground passage is combined with the completion of the Warsaw Trams works. And all acceptances on the railway side should be completed at the turn of May and June 2025. Then the railway workers will apply for an occupancy permit. It assumes that the underground passages will be available to passengers at the end of the holidays.

Mochocki reported that commercialization of service and retail space is ongoing. – The equipment of these facilities will begin after obtaining the occupancy permit. By then, we will have signed most of the agreements with tenants, which means that in the second half of 2025, retail and catering outlets will be opened one by one – he explained.

Trams will reach the Western Station in 2026

The course of work on the construction of the underground tram stop was presented by Konrad Niklewicz, a member of the management board of Tramwaje Warszawskie. He emphasized that the reinforced concrete works at the stop will be completed and finishing works will begin by the end of the year.

– We would like acceptance procedures to start in May, so that passengers and residents of Warsaw will be able to use this space at the turn of the year. And the first trams will reach the Western Station in 2026, he added.

Piotr Wawrzyniec from Budimex said that by the end of the year, elevators will be launched to all platforms and most likely to the bus stop under the station hall.
