Warsaw. Renovation works at Bankowy Square. They will replace the pavements, there will be more greenery and new trees

Road workers began the next stage of work at Bankowy Square. This time they will renovate pavements and plant greenery. In several places, concrete will be replaced by flowers, shrubs and trees. New discounts will appear in the area of ​​the monument to Juliusz Słowacki and the blue skyscraper.

The capital city hall announced on Thursday about the start of the next stage of work at Bankowy Square. Officials want to change this place, but decided to implement corrections gradually, not within one, large reconstruction. Previously, road workers dealt with the construction of a road for bicycles and ramps for prams, also planted a dozen trees on both sides of the square and renovated some of the pavements.

The next stage focuses on green and aesthetics and pedestrians. First of all, the pavement on the west side of the banking square will be renovated. Old and wavy concrete surface will be replaced with elegant granite slabs.

Then the plantings will start. There are plans to plant 30 new trees – oaks, plane trees, ash, cherries and clones in two varieties. In addition, floral compositions will be planted at the place of unnecessary concrete surface. Greens will take up space for surfaces and islets on the outskirts of the parking lot, and they will also appear along the road for bicycles. “The location and shape of these greenery are consistent with the concept of changes on the banking square developed in social consultations. The greenery project was created in close cooperation with the conservator of monuments, which also had an impact on the selection of plant species” – says the town hall in a message.

Space around Słowacki

The central part of the square will undergo the metamorphosis, where the monument of Juliusz Słowacki stands. Road workers in consultation with the City Transport Board will connect two existing bus stops into one from which all lines will leave. Thanks to this change, additional space for planting and a new pavement layout will be “recovered”.

A new flower discount will be created in the monument's axis, planted with space (otherwise onthe). “Kosmos is a plant from the Asthrotnea family with petals in shades of white, pink and purple, reaching a height of up to 1.2 meters and very durable. Its colloquial name, 'Varsovian', probably comes from the fact that it was the first plant that bloomed in the debris of the destroyed capital” – explain officials.

They also announce that all concrete will be caught in the immediate vicinity of the pedestal. From the road side, it will be replaced by shrubs, and Dalie will grow next to the pedestal.

Larger discount and rose of President Starzyński

On the eastern side of the square, where there are tram stops, a metro station and a monument to President Stefan Starzyński, a pavement will also be renovated. Over the entire length, i.e. from the “Solidarity” avenue to Senatorska Street, concrete will give way to granite ankle. There will also be more greenery due to enlargement of discounts under the blue skyscraper. There are also plans to plant trees and roses on it, including their orange variety called President Stefan Starzyński.

“Drametically, the square will change its appearance at Plac Bankowy 4. This area has already been pre -prepared for work by the Greenery Board of the Warsaw Capital City of Warsaw. In a moment bouquet hydrangeas, decorative grasses and perennials will appear there” – calculates the town hall.

The concrete rushing started

On Thursday, work related to the renovation of the pavement and the crushing of concrete began. Their contractor is the Municipal Road Remont and Maintenance Plant. “During construction works there will be minor changes in public transport and restrictions on using the parking lot at Bankowy Square in the area of ​​Elektoralna Street” – warn officials.

After removing the concrete, the area will be dealt with by a specialist greenery company, which will be selected in a public tender. Its task will be to plant new trees, grasses and shrubs and install small architecture.

“It is possible that the first batch of plantings, on the west side, will appear in the spring” – says the town hall. “If they fail to make them entirely before the summer heat, those on the eastern side of the square will be finished at moderate autumn temperatures. All for the sake of the plants as best as possible in the ground” – the officials reserve.

We would like to remind you that as part of public consultations in 2023 a concept of changes was created at Bankowy Square. For three weeks, specialists, social activists and a group of residents prepared it together. The main postulates that were developed at the workshop were calming down the traffic, liquidation of the parking lot, the introduction of more greenery, as well as the symbolic marking of the ghetto wall that went this way.
