After some time, classic SIM cards may completely disappear from the market. They are slowly giving way to a modern solution – eSIM. Will this technology really change the way we use our mobile devices?
Okay, but what exactly is eSIM?
It is a microscopic integrated circuit permanently installed in our device. Instead of replacing plastic cards, everything is done digitally – just like during installation application on the phone. The chip itself is the size of a fingernail, but it can replace any physical SIM card.
Imagine that you are changing your operator. Instead of going to the salon to get a new card, you receive it SMS with QR code. You scan it with your phone and… it's ready. No rummaging in drawers looking for the SIM tray key, no wondering which card format fits your phone. phone. What's more, you can have several numbers of different operators on your phone and switch between them.
What do we gain?
eSIM cards give us above all, comfort. No more physical cards that can be lost or damaged. A thief won't take the card out of a stolen phone because… there's nothing to take out, and without knowing the PIN code, he won't be able to modify the card settings. There is also an ecological aspect – less plastic in circulation is always good news.
However, the list of advantages does not end there. Thanks to this technology we can easily use one number on several devices. In turn, when you go for training, you will not have to take your phone with you – the smartwatch with eSIM will receive all important calls and messages. Do you work while traveling? iPad can use the same internet package as your phone, without having to look for it WiFi or buying an additional card.
Is this the end of regular SIM cards?
Not so fast. Although the direction of change is clear, traditional SIM cards will remain with us for some time. Why? Many older phones still need them, and not all operators are ready to fully transition to eSIM. For now, this technology can be found mainly in more expensive Apple and Samsung smartphones and watches. In the USA, the latest iPhones are sold only with eSIM. So if you somehow acquire an iPhone 14 or newer in the United States, keep in mind that you will only activate it via eSIM.
