Do you complain that the sound from the TV is flat and not very expressive? It's normal. Even the most expensive TVs have their limitations – after all, manufacturers had to stuff the speakers somewhere in these and thinner housings. This is where the receiver comes in.
A receiver – what can this device can?
This is the heart of any audio system. Imagine that you have different sound sources – TV, gaming console, music player. Each of them sends a sound signal, but weak and not adapted to large speakers. The receiver takes over this signal, strengthens it and transforms it so that it sounds exactly as it should.
The name of the receiver was created from a combination of two words: amplifier (amplifier) and tuner (radio receiver). And in fact, once this radio function was crucial. Today it is a rather nice addition – modern amplitules can do much more.
When stereo, and when is the home cinema?
On the market you will find two basic types of amplifier. The first is stereo models – simpler and cheaper devices that support only two speakers. They are great if you mainly listen to music and you don't care about spatial effects.
The second type is multi -channel receivers, Also called home cinema receivers. These can handle 5, 7 or even more speakers. Thanks to this, the sound surrounds you from all sides – you hear a flying helicopter, coming on the right car or the steps behind the back.
What should a good receiver have?
First of all, the right power. For a small room (up to 20m²), a device with a capacity of 50-70W per channel is enough. Something stronger will be useful in a larger living room. However, do not be fooled by advertising slogans – Manufacturers often give peak, not a continuous power, which the device actually provides.
Another thing is connectors. A modern receiver should have a minimum of 4 HDMI inputs – to the TV, console, player Blu-ray and decoder. Optical and analogue inputs for connecting older equipment will also be useful.
The latest functions worth having
Modern receivers are real multimedia devices. Latest Models offer:
- Support for Dolby Atmos – 3D sound system, where you can even hear the sounds of the ceiling
- Wireless streaming – you can send music straight from the smartphone
- Multiroom – one receiver can support speakers in several rooms
- Automatic calibration – the device adapts the sound to the room's acoustics
- Voice control – compliance with Alexa or Google Assistant
How much does it all cost?
Prices start with less than PLN 1,000 for basic stereo models. A good multi-channel amplifier costs at least PLN 2,500-3000. The most expensive models can cost over PLN 10,000, but it is already equipment for real audiophiles.
It is worth investing a little more in the equipment of a recognized brand. Denon, Yamaha, Pioneer or Marantz are producers who have been specializing in audio equipment for years. Their devices may be more expensive, but they offer better sound quality and greater reliability.
