Wrocław. Big cleanup, two million sandbags to remove

During the flood alarm in Wrocław, two million sandbags appeared. Ecosystem spokesman Piotr Krejner informed that almost 1.5 million sandbags appeared in the city, another 500,000. were spread on the embankments by Polish Waters.

When the threat in the capital of Lower Silesia had passed, some of the bags were transported to municipalities that were waiting for the peak wave to pass on the Oder. Then a total of 28,000 bags left Wrocław, including: to the Wołowski and Głogów counties, as well as to the Lubusz Voivodeship.

Many of the sandbags lay on the streets of Wrocław for weeks. “In the first week after the flood alarm, Ecosystem removed the bags from key arteries in Wrocław. In the following weeks, from sidewalks and places of large gathering,” says the spokesman.

Thanks to the support of WOT soldiers, professional soldiers and other subcontractors, most of the bags have already been transported to the flood protection deposit at Wyboista Street, with approximately 30,000 tons of sand there. – Since each bag differs in weight, it is difficult to estimate exactly how much we should expect. But it may be about 10,000 tons – informs Krejner.

Sandbags are still noticeable in some places. This also applies to the center of Wrocław.

“We have entered the third stage of removing the bags and on October 14 we started placing containers in Wrocław's housing estates. This is a response to residents' requests and another element of the systemic removal of sandbags from public spaces in Wrocław. We currently have over 50 locations designated and the schedule for providing containers is available on our website,” he explains.

Ecosystem – the company responsible for cleanliness in Wrocław, reminds that sandbags are not waste. The stored sand will be used for flood protection purposes in the future.
