The first was infected with the child

One of the first cases of diphtheria has been confirmed last week with a six -year -old child. The child was not vaccinated. He returned from vacation in Africa, from Zanzibar. Doctors from the Provincial Specialist Hospital Gromkowski in Wrocław on Monday reported that the child's condition was severe but stable.

The diphtheria was suspected for several days in an adult patient who had contact with this child. On Wednesday, doctors confirmed the diphtheria of the untal patient.

“This patient has symptoms of heavy angina; we are currently in the diagnosis process,” informed prof. Krzysztof Simon, head of the department of infectious diseases.

The source of infection are carriers

“A child treated in our hospital has a heavy form of diphtheria with the occupation of the upper respiratory tract,” emphasized prof. Simon.

Prof. Simon explained that the diphtheria is moved by air-spropelic road as a result of direct contact. The source of infection are carriers. “Clinical symptoms – from harmless pharyngitis in adults, but in children the course is tragic with high, up to 30 percent, the percentage of mortality, if patients are not treated, when the treatment is implemented, mortality is from 5 to 10 percent.” – said the doctor. He added that the death of patients is due to “clogging of the upper respiratory tract, heart muscle classes and less often the central nervous system and kidneys.”

According to the data of the National Institute of Public Health – PZH, in 2024 two diploma cases were recorded in Poland, in 2023 – one, and in 2022 none.

Diphane vaccination is mandatory in Poland. According to the vaccination calendar, each child should be vaccinated with four doses of vaccine in the early months of life (from the second to eighteenth – basic vaccination) and a dose in the age of six.

Doses resembling vaccines every 10 years are recommended due to the disappearance of immunity, over time.

Diphane – what is this disease?

Diphist, also referred to as diffter, Krup or Dławiec, is an acute and severe infectious disease caused by bacteria called diphtheria clubs. Infection occurs by droplet or by direct contact with a sick person or carrier, less often by contacting infected animals, such as cats, dogs and horses. Symptoms initially appear at the colonization of bacteria, i.e. in the throat, on palatal tonsils, in the larynx, less often in the nose, on the conjunctivas and mucous membranes of the genitals.

In places of penetration into the body, bacteria cause tissue necrosis, the so -called Pseudo -Baby, having the form of gray, translucent or black bleeding raids when trying to detach. Together with enlarging cervical lymph nodes and neck edema, they can lead to narrowing of the light of the throat and larynx as well as death as a result of respiratory failure or cardiac arrest.

Diph meter clubs secrete a strong diphtheria toxin, which, spreading in the body, can lead to disorders in the functioning of many organs, i.e. to myocarditis and necrosis of the kidney coils. There may also be neurological complications, such as palate and back wall paralysis, muscle paralysis responsible for eye movements, limb and facial muscle paralysis.
