An audit of the prosecutor's office activities during the PiS government may cover up to 600 cases in total. 200 have already been checked. One of them is the “Two Towers” scandal. Gerald Birgfellner testified in the prosecutor's office for several dozen hours in this case. He also had recordings of conversations with the PiS president.
During Friday's press conference, Mariusz Błaszczak pretended that he did not know what the “two towers” case was about, although the day before, Jarosław Kaczyński talked about it in his presence. – Nobody took any bribe in this case – emphasized the PiS president.
Now the “two towers” case is being re-examined by the prosecutor's office. Jarosław Kaczyński conducted business talks at the PiS headquarters, which is prohibited by law. The conversations were recorded and concerned the construction of a skyscraper in the shape of two towers for EUR 300 million.

“I am ready to testify in this court that this work was done for us, I mean for Srebrna” – Jarosław Kaczyński himself admitted that there was work for the Srebrna company, closely related to him and PiS. The conversations were recorded by a family businessman from Austria, who was not paid for his work and complained that he was even forced to pay a bribe to a former priest, whose decision was to determine the construction of the skyscraper.
Although it was Gerald Birgfellner who presented the evidence – recordings, invoices, account statements, powers of attorney – he had problems during the PiS government. – The fact that there are recordings and documents does not mean that they constitute a reasonable suspicion of a crime – said Stanisław Piotrowicz, then an MP from Law and Justice, currently a judge of the Constitutional Tribunal.
“One PiS family”
The CBA did not even examine the statements of the PiS president in connection with Srebrna, and the head of the CBA at that time was Ernest Bejda, a PiS politician who once worked for Srebrna. The then head of ABW, Piotr Pogonowski, also worked for Srebrna. The son of Mariusz Kamiński, the coordinator of the secret services, also worked for Srebrna, and the head of the bank that was supposed to finance Srebrna's investments was Zbigniew Ziobro's friend.
– One PiS family, close to mafia families, says Robert Kropiwnicki, deputy minister of state assets.
Between the first and second round of interrogations of the businessman, as can be seen in the photos published by “Fakt”, Jarosław Kaczyński came to Zbigniew Ziobro. Earlier, PiS changed the law so that the prosecutor general could reveal the secret of any investigation to anyone. The investigation into the Srebrna case, which was inconvenient for Jarosław Kaczyński, was not initiated.
– There was already a politician in Polish history who didn't want anything for himself, that was Józef Piłsudski – commented Ryszard Czarnecki, a PiS politician at the time. – Jarosław Kaczyński is a crystal-honest man and does not have to explain anything – said Zbigniew Kuźmiuk, then PiS MEP.
– If I were a prosecutor and deputy minister of justice, I would never initiate such proceedings – noted Michał Wójcik, then deputy minister of justice of PiS.

It was embarrassing for PiS that after several dozen hours of fruitless interrogations, the Austrian left for Austria. But now they consider their politician's escape to Hungary a justified and praiseworthy act. They consider the audit of this investigation and nearly 200 other similar proceedings during their rule to be illegal. Although there was evidence of crime, there were recordings and there were discontinuances in cases that were inconvenient for PiS.
– There are no scandals in PiS, but there are recordings that say otherwise. We already have one representative of PiS who fled to Hungary – points out Jacek Karnowski, Deputy Minister of Funds and Regional Policy.
Marcin Romanowski, who has now fled to Hungary from justice, became deputy minister of justice just before the then prosecutor's office refused to initiate an investigation into the two towers.
