During the control of the Kilaw tanker, belonging to the Russian “Shadow Fleet”, Estonian inspectors found 40 deficiencies – the Estonia transport office informed on Saturday. It was added that the ship sailed without a flag. The ship was banned from continuing the cruise until the deficiencies were removed.

The deficiencies mainly concern irregularities in the documentation, and the others – the implementation of the maritime safety management system, preparation of the crew in the event of a ship's failure and technical deficiencies.

– One of the important problems is the suspicion that the ship has no flag, which means that it is not subject to legislation. Estonia inspected a ship flowing without flag, within its borders of its rights and international obligations – explained Kristjan Truu, director of the Maritime Department of the Estonian Transport Office, emphasizing that the authorities are in contact with the representative of the shipowner.

The ship was covered by sanctions

The tanker was detained by the Estonian Navy on Friday morning at the entrance to the Tallin Bay in the Baltic Sea. Currently, guarded by the jacket ship, is located on an anchor at the Muuga Port.

Kilada tanker sailed with India to the Russian port of Ust-Bąt in the Leningrad region in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finnish.

The Navy reported that the stopping of the ship “is not related to the threat of damage to critical infrastructure”, and the purpose of the initiated investigation is to check the legal status and technical condition of the ship. There are 24 crew members on board the ship, and the captain comes from China. The others are most likely citizens Mjanmy.

Estonian authorities, in connection with the intensity of freight traffic through the Gulf of Finnish towards Russiaintensified controls of suspicious units. From mid -2024, the Transport Office has checked documentation, including over 450 ships regarding insurance and state affiliation. Several units were also inspected directly on anchors.
