Subtropical Cyclone Patty has formed over the Azores. Rain and strong wind warnings are in force on seven of the nine islands in the archipelago. The storm is expected to move east, reaching mainland Portugal next week.
According to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC), it developed in the North Atlantic on Saturday storm Patty. It was accompanied by wind gusts of 85 kilometers per hour. On Sunday, the center of the element was over the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores, bringing heavy rainfall there.
The storm is heading east
The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) issued warnings on Sunday for seven of the nine islands in the archipelago. In the morning, level two alerts on a three-level scale were in force in the eastern part of the Azores, on the islands of Sao Miguel and Santa Maria. There, and on the islands of Faial, Pico, Sao Jorge, Terceira and Graciosa, strong wind alerts were issued.
Cyclone Patty is moving east towards mainland Portugal, where it will arrive next week. The storm is expected to gradually weaken, becoming a subtropical depression, the NHC said. It will continue to bring heavy rainfall.
