According to United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Moldova visited by approximately 319,500 tourists in 2023. It is true that it is by 17 percent. more than a year earlier, but it is in the ranking of the least visited countries in Europe Moldova is the leader.
This infamous title, however, does not mean anything. A small country located in between Ukraine a Romania it is a real gem of the Old Continent. Its tourist potential lies in beautiful landscapes, rich culture and historybut also in low prices.
The least visited country in Europe. What to see in Moldova?
Although Moldova does not have access to the sea, it will certainly charm us with amazing views, for example in… Orgies National Park. It is the only national park in Moldova. Its aim is to protect the country's natural, historical and cultural values ​​and to promote ecotourism.
The area, untouched by tourist commercialism, stretches over four districts and is located only 46 km away from Chisinauwhich can be reached by direct connection with Warsaw. In turn, you can reach the park itself from the Moldovan capital by car or bus.
The park is certainly the greatest natural attraction in Moldova. It offers many hiking trails and breathtaking views of river valleys nestled among the mountains. The numerous archaeological sites, noble manors and ruins of Stary Orgiejów (former town) are also impressive. The monks' cells carved in the rock (some of them still live there!) and monasteries emphasize the peace that distinguishes this place from other facilities of this type in Europe.
When going to the south of Moldova, it is worth exploring Gaugas culture living in the city Comrat. This is the only region where compulsory education in Romanian has not been introduced and Russian influences are still strong.
While in the region Transnistriaa must see fortress in Soroki – one of the most recognizable monuments of Moldova. The building played an important defensive role in the country during the invasions. Currently, you can admire the wild nature of the area from there. Before traveling, however, it is worth reading the recommendations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Polish diplomacy advises against traveling to Transnistria, as it is currently not possible to provide consular assistance there.
Moldova – where to stay overnight?
While World Tourism Day 2024 places related to the development of the tourism industry in Moldova were distinguished. The tourist complex was considered the discovery of the year “The Carpenter's House” in Molovata. Its origins date back to 1950. After a thorough renovation in 2020, new accommodation and a restaurant offering traditional Moldovan cuisine were created there.
Also worth recommending is the tourist complex “Kuba” located opposite the famous Moldavian Capriana Monastery. The place is approximately 40 kilometers from Chisinau and located near charming bicycle and hiking trails and vineyards.
Moldova is proud of its long wine tradition. Just 16 km from Chisinau there is the Milesti Mici winery, with the world's largest underground wine cellar. Endemic grapes such as Feteasca Alba, Feteasca Regala and Feteasca Neagra are recognized all over the world, and in 2020, the Wine Trails of Moldova were the first Moldovan tourist trail to be integrated with Iter Vitis – an international wine route.
How to get to Moldova? Is a visa required for Moldova?
Nature untouched by human activity, the country's rich history and culture, and world-famous wines are just a drop in the ocean of what Moldova has to offer. Therefore, it is definitely worth including it on your list of holiday destinations. We will get to Chisinau, which is a great base direct flight from Warsaw. Non-stop connections are offered by LOT Polish Airlines and Wizz Air.
To cross the border, travelers only need an ID card (the exception is the Republic of Transnistria, where a passport is required for entry). You can stay in Moldova for 90 days without the need to obtain a visa. The best way to get around the country is by marshrutkas, buses or a taxi, which you can rent with a driver for EUR 120 a day. This is an attractive solution for group travelers.
Regardless of the travel style we choose, there is a good chance that we will fall in love with Moldavia's untamed nature, delicious, organic cuisine with its proud pickles, local wines and, of course, low prices.
