This is the sixth annual report on the most popular passwords used on the Internet. Globally, as many as 27 of the most frequently chosen combinations can be cracked by hackers in less than one second. What does the Polish Top 20 look like?

On Thursday, a report on passwords used on the Internet was published for the sixth time on the website of the NordPass online password manager. “Top 200 Most Popular Passwords” shows what passwords are set most often. This year, for the first time, both personal and business accounts were disclosed. 2.5 TB of data downloaded from publicly available sources was examined. The study was conducted in 44 countries, including Poland.

The most popular passwords used on the Internet

According to the report, the most popular password in the world, for both personal and corporate accounts, is “123456”. It is used by over 3 million people on personal accounts and over 1.2 million on corporate accounts. This is the most obvious password, which is also in first place in Poland, and hackers can crack it in less than one second. Likewise, 26 of the most popular passwords. In addition to a sequence of consecutive numbers, passwords also include the word “password” or combinations of keys located next to each other on the keyboard.

The global Top 200 also includes, among others: iloveyou, computer, baseball, superman, killer, or pokemon and the names: michael, daniel, charlie, nicole, or ashley (entered this way – red).

Among the work entries in the Polish Top 20 there are also women's names: monika and agnieszka, as well as alamakota and misiek (entered this way – ed).

What should a secure password look like?

The password research company concludes: “After analyzing six years of data, we can conclude that there has not been much improvement in password habits. Despite the efforts of many organizations to increase (security) awareness, the problem is still widespread,” it says.

What should a secure password look like? “It should be at least 20 characters long and contain a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers and special symbols. Avoid information that is easy to guess, such as birthdays, names or common words,” we read in the report's conclusions.
